Learning: ImPOSSIBLE

Learning can be done by people for the people. The autonomy of learning lies on how the information is given to the person who is responsible for the breeding of knowledge inside his head. When I was in college, we were given tasks that I thought are not realistic. There were lots of paper works, research activities, and group works that needed to be done. The normal reaction is, “why the hell do I need to do this?” I complained a lot. I complained because I have to do all the learning by myself and I thought that it did not make sense because I went to school for me to learn what my teachers would teach, not for me to bury myself with the materials and learn by myself.

I decided to go on, manage my time, and tried to finish what I needed to finish. But of course, I cannot get away with the complaining and all that. I usually go to the library to do my research, go to the internet shop for additional resources online. I meet my classmates and share some ideas and compare notes. I asked my teachers for consultations and some more points to consider in order for me to be able to submit a well-researched and crafted paper. I consult some senior friends for some more tips and ideas. I must say that learning is not easy but little did I know that I learned a lot from that approach. I discovered so many things that might not be discussed by my teacher inside the class. Those learning are basically hard to forget because I worked hard for it. I learned it by myself.

This constructivist approach will give so many benefits to the students once it is being managed well by the teachers. It develops students critical thinking, autonomy to learning, creativity, and problem solving skills. As constructivist learning theory explains, knowledge is personally constructed rather than acquired or transferred from another individual. As it is true that spoon-feeding might have its perks, but the problem is that, it does not give much value to the student’s mental development. This kind of approach by my teachers in college might be challenging in learning, but it is not impossible. Moreover, it gives me knowledge that retains over a long period of time.

Collaboration with classmates just like what I’ve done, consultation with the teachers, using technology for learning, and asking some advice from senior friends are extremely invaluable to the total learning of an individual. This social constructivist theory just like that Vygotsky explained, produces knowledge and understanding of a particular subject through collaboration. Yes, constructivist approach might be challenging for those who are not into social collaboration or to those who are used to being told what to do and what to write, but it is a good practice to be able to obtain a well-rounded learning that will last longer that tomorrow. It gives us not only a developed critical thinking skills but it also teaches us to manage our time well and to become responsible learners of this generations. This approach is unquestionably important. In today’s world where technology is evolving, learning can be done in just a click of a mouse and several taps in the computer keyboard. Yes, it might be challenging, but it is not impossible.
